‘The Konik Horse’. This is a Polish breed, which translates as ‘Little Horse’.The Konik was born in the nineteenth century, when Polish farmers captured the last of the Tarpan horses and bred them with their own workhorses.
Characteristics:
Height: 12-13hh
Colour: Usually dun, with a dorsal stripe.
Conformation: Upright shoulders on a broad body, low withers, deep girth and a large head.
Generally used for harness work. They are a strong, hard working breed with good temperament.
More recently the Konik has been introduced into Britain, where they are helping to maintain wildlife habitats in several areas. The Fens and Kent included. The Konik horses in Kent can be found at Stodmarsh, nr Canterbury, and is well worth a visit if you are that part of the country. These particular horses have been brought over from Holland, where a breeding programme is in place.
