Magnotherapy

The history of people using magnets for therapy goes back centuries; throughout the centuries we have records of Aristotle, Pliny the Elder and Galen all recommending the use of magnets for therapeutic effect.

Now there is a great deal of interest in using static magnet therapy for ourselves and our animals, for many conditions.

It is difficult to know exactly how magnets actually affect the body, but there has been much research into the therapeutic effect they impart to the user, and it seems that they work in this way;

-Magnetic fields increase the electrical conductivity of the blood, increasing its efficiency. More efficient blood is able to transport more useful oxygen around the body, and remove waste products such as carbon dioxide and lactic acid (which can cause painful muscle cramps, particularly after exercise).This increased efficiency in blood flow also can aid circulation to previous cold spots, such as at the extremities of the body.

-Pain Relief; magnets can alter the pH of the body, so reduce the pain experienced particularly in ailments like osteoarthritis.

So, for our horses, it is easy to see how magnetic products such as rugs and boots may be able to relieve numerous ailments. Many vets and owners have reported amazing improvement in the following conditions;

Arthritis/ osteoporosis
Bone spavin
Broken bones healing
Bursitis
Cramp
Eczema/ other skin conditions
Haematomas
Laminitis
Muscular pain and strain
Oedema
Pain, chronic
Ringbone
Swollen joints
Tendonitis

Magnetic products are used widely on competition horses, and with those who have sustained injury; there is much anecdotal evidence to support its use.

One owner said recently;

‘…is quite a stiff horse and takes some time to loosen up, especially after a night in his stable. I have been really surprised by the difference in him since using the magnetic boots. …when I ride him out with the other horses he now keeps up easily, whereas before he used to struggle. I was always a bit sceptical about magnotherapy but now I’m convinced it really does work!’ A. Cannon (Horse and Rider Feb 2003)

An equine sports therapist stated;

‘At three day events, I’ll use magnetic rugs in conjunction with other things. They can be used after the cross country and when travelling ..’ C. Caden Parker (Horse and Rider Feb 1999)

Magnotherapy products with static magnets are available for use by people, horses, dogs, cats and other animals, and may prove to be a worthwhile investment for the long term health and well being of their user.
